Course description

This course introduces the new TSM 6.1 Reporting and real-time Monitoring -
feature, a complete new reporting approach for TSM 6.1. This feature is based upon the already existing IBM Tivoli Monitoring ITM 6.2 and the new IBM Tivoli Common Reporting (TCR).

The course also introduces also the open source tool BIRT (Business Intelligence Reporting Tools). A powerful visualization-tool for building reports based on company or business data.

From simple lists to more complex dynamic reports. It’s up to you. There is quite a hype now around BIRT. BIRT reporting is becoming more and more popular not only because it’s powerful but also because of it’s endorsement by big IT companies which have integrated BIRT into some of their product offerings.

Audience

This course is suitable for:

- Personnel who require a good working knowledge of the open source reporting tool BIRT
- TSM System-Administrators who require a good working knowledge of the new TSM 6.1 reporting and real-time monitoring feature.

BIRT

- Installation of Birt Designer
- Introduction to the BIRT reporting system
- BIRT Versions
- BIRT Architecture (BIRT designer, runtime engine,...)
- What is a BIRT report project ?
- BIRT views and navigation in workspace
-Data Sources – where the data is coming from ?
- SQL – some basics
- Data Sets – query – mechanism for data
- Report Parameter – dynamic changes during report initialization
- Cascading parameters
- Data Cubes – dynamic crosstabs
- Report items / report elements like:
Textelements, dynamic text, labels, data fields
Images, grid, table, chart, crosstab
- "Joins" in BIRT
- Styles and style packages
- Templates as report prototype
- Report libraries
- Usages of java scripts
- Expression editor
- "Drill-through" reports

TSM 6.1 /TCR

- Introduction and overview of the new TSM 6.1 reporting and real-time monitoring environment
- Configuration /customization of ITM data warehouse, TEPS (Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server) and the summarization and pruning agent in order to collect historical data.
- Installation and customization of the TSM monitoring ITM agent / template in order to access TSM 6.1 data attribute groups.
- Introduction and usage of the standard provided TSM reports
- Introduction to TCR report snapshots and TCR command line interface
- Guidance for changing / adapting existing TSM reports. This means: exporting reports from TCR, import them into BIRT workbench and change one or two reports and export and re-import into TCR for execution!

Remark: during the workshop there is no time to design and write a complete new report. But the participants will get the knowledge how to do it.
